Chon-Ji
Number of Movements: 19
Meaning of Chon-Ji:
CHON- JI means literally “the Heaven the Earth”. It is, in the Orient, interpreted as the creation of the world or the beginning of human history, therefore, it is the initial pattern played by the beginner. This pattern consists of two similar parts; one to represent the Heaven and the other the Earth

Starting Position: Parallel ready stance
The illustrations for this pattern assume that the student is standing on line AB and facing D

• Move the left foot to B forming a left walking stance toward B while executing a low block to B with the left forearm
• Move the right foot to B forming a right walking stance toward B while executing a middle punch to B with the right fist

Attack = Always three middle section front punches in walking stance, start with right leg back in low block.

DEFENCES AS BELOW START FROM PARALLEL READY STANCE

1. Right leg back walking stance, middle inner forearm block to the inside three times.
Counter attack = Reverse punch

2. Left leg back ‘L’ stance, middle inner forearm block to the outside three times.
Counter attack = Move the left leg forward 45 degrees, move the right leg behind the opponents front leg into a left ‘L’ stance, execute a right knifehand strike to the neck.

3. Left leg back ‘L’ stance, middle inward outer forearm block to the inside three times.
Counter attack = Slide forward in a left ‘L’ stance and execute a right front backfist strike to the face.

4. Left leg back ‘L’ stance, middle inward forearm block to the outside three times.

What is 3 step sparring
Three step sparring is designed for the beginner to learn the basic techniques. It teaches the student many things i.e. proper distance, correct facing, forearm conditioning, correct blocks, correct stances, counter attacks and timing.

DAN-GUN is named after the holy Dan-Gun, the legendary founder of Korea in the year of 2,333 BC

• Move the left foot to B forming a right L-stance toward B, at the same time executing a middle guarding block to B with a knife-hand
• Move the right foot to B forming a right walking stance toward B while executing a high punch to B with the right fist

Counter attack = Move right foot to left foot, pushing off left foot slide back at a 45 degree angle into a right ‘L’ stance with a forearm guarding block, execute a right front kick landing in a right walking stance double punch.

DO-SAN is the pseudonym of the patriot Ahn Chang-Ho (1876-1938), who devoted his life to furthering the education of Korea and its independence movement
Starting Position: Parallel ready stance
• Move the left foot to B, forming a left walking stance toward B while executing a high side block to B with the left outer forearm
• Execute a middle punch to B with the right fist while maintaining a left walking stance toward B
• Move the left foot on line AB, and then turn clockwise to form a right walking stance toward A while executing a high side block to A with the right outer forearm
• Execute a middle punch to A with the left fist while maintaining a right walking stance toward A
• Move the left foot to D, forming a right L-stance toward D while executing a middle guarding block to D with a knife-hand

9. Right leg back ‘L’ stance, middle palm pushing block to the outside three times.
Counter attack = Slide back at a 45 degree angle to the outside of your opponent into a right ‘L’ stance with a knifehand guarding block. Execute a right mid section turning kick, put the kicking foot behind the opponent’s front foot landing in vertical stance while executing a knifehand strike to the neck.

10. Right leg back ‘L’ stance, middle knifehand block to the inside two times. 
Counter attack = Move right foot to left foot pushing off left foot, slide back at a 45 degree angle into a right ‘L’ stance with a knifehand guarding block. Execute a reverse side kick, land in a right walking stance whilst executing a left hand reverse knifehand strike to the philtrum.


THREE STEP SEMI-FREE SPARRING (BAN JAYOO MATSOKI)
Attacking students start in L stance, guarding block.
Defending students start in parallel stance.

Basic Level

What is 3 Step Semi-Free Sparring
This form of sparring is designed as a step forward from basic 3 step sparring. It involves three consecutive attacks and three blocks or evasions, plus a counter attack.

3. Attack = Front kick, twin vertical punch.
Defence = Right leg back, walking stance, X fist pressing block. Left leg back, walking stance, outer forearm wedging block.

Meaning of Yul-Gok:
YUL-GOK is the pseudonym of a great philosopher and scholar Yi l (1536-1584) nicknamed the “Confucius of Korea” The 38 movements of this pattern refer to his birthplace on 38 latitude and the diagram represents “scholar”

• Move the left foot to B forming a sitting stance toward D while extending the left fist to D horizontally
• Execute a middle punch to D with the right fist while maintaining a sitting stance toward D

One Step Sparring (ILBO MATSOKI)

Both attacker and defender start in parallel ready position, attacker step forward with right leg into walking stance and punches with right hand. On the second occasion, the same attacker steps forward, but with left leg and left hand punching.

Red belts are expected to develop their own techniques on one step sparring using the following guidelines.
These are not in any set order!

1. Hand only.
2. Foot only.

5. Jumping.

Meaning of Hwa-Rang:
HWA-RANG is named after the Hwa-Rang youth group, which originated in the Silla Dynasty about 600 AD. This group eventually became the actual driving force for the unification of the three Kingdoms of Korea. The 29 movements refer to the 29th Infantry Division, where Tae kwon-Do developed into maturity

Meaning of Choong-Moo:
CHOONG-MOO was the name given to the great Admiral Yi Soon-Sin of the Yi Dynasty. He was reputed to have invented the first armoured battleship (Kobukson) in 1592, which is said to be the precursor of the present day submarine. The reason why this pattern ends with a left hand attack is to symbolize his regrettable death, having no chance to show his unrestrained potentiality checked by the forced reservation of his loyalty to the king
